Whilst researching books for the thread, that have been written on child sexual abuse in the church there was one I had heard of but not read. ie Paperdolls: A True Story of Childhood Sexual Abuse in Mormon Neighborhoods by April Daniels and Carol Scott 1993.

Horrific abuse by Priests and others
As is so common, the family were upright members of the church. To anyone looking from the outside, nothing appears wrong. Pillars of the community. This can be seen as the cover story or in different alters or both. Even if in an alter that has knowledge of the abuse, it is easier to survive and get along by pretending that abuse does not happen. Under the surface however abuse is rife.

This PaperDolls story with pseudonyms was the same story told later in an official report by Marion B Smith, with some real names UT9 – A Report of Child Sexual Abuse in LDS Neighbourhoods by Marion B Smith [UT106]
However comments by MDK in an Amazon book review on the book indicate that the abuse in the family may have been at least one stage worse. Using Marion Smith’s report as a key, MDK was able to decipher many of the aliases used in the book.
Alias*= Real Name
Norton Scott* = Nick Smith
Carol Scott* (author) = Marion Burrows Smith
Loraine* = Eileen Smith Carstensen
Hank* = Bill Carstensen
Geraldine* (babysitter) = Janice
Real life family Nick Smith and Marion Burrows Smith (penname Carol Scott) had seven daughters. Kathleen (Eileen), Sharon, Lindy, Robin, Charlotte, Wendy and Niki.
In working out the real names, MDK revealed a much uglier and sinister secret. The two authors, far from being in separate families as in the book, were mother and daughter and the reason the story was told as separate families was to hide their internal family trauma and abuse and not implicate the family patriarch, Nick Smith.
The number of adults involved in the ring is absolutely staggering. Particularly alarming is the involvement of the “Giant and the Witch”, who according to the children, were the most aggressive and violent. The book explained how the organized sex ring, led by Giant and the Witch, were making “child porn”.
Marion’s report told how the police called Brenda Miles well in advance of their search warrant, giving her enough time to destroy any evidence Brett Bullock was the only one who went to prison, largely because the abused children of more prominent families pushed the issue against him. He turned out to be the scapegoat in all of it.
This sort of abuse and organization doesn’t just appear out of nowhere. It doesn't start with that 1985 crop of parents. This is generational. Bill Carstensen was himself abused by his mother; as a child and extending into his adulthood. This begs the question: Who abused the Giant*? Who abused the Witch*?
Was it the previous generation including one particularly prominent father?
Without further research I am not sure who the particularly prominent father is, but I want to post this blog today.

Appendix 1 - MDK Analysis [2] [2a]
Real life family Nick Smith and Marion Burrows Smith (penname Carol Scott) had seven daughters. Kathleen (Eileen), Sharon, Lindy, Robin, Charlotte, Wendy and Niki. Marion wrote a report dated March 2004 titled “A Report of Child Sexual Abuse in LDS Neighborhoods” that can be easily found online.
The book Paperdolls, published in 1992, was an earlier account of the same 1985 story but veiled in aliases.
I was initially making a map of all the people so I could keep track of who was who. However, in so doing I revealed a much uglier and sinister secret than the one they intended to tell.
Using Marion Smith’s report as a key, I was able to conclusively decipher many of the aliases used in the book.
Alias*= Real Name
Norton Scott* = Nick Smith
Carol Scott* (author) = Marion Burrows Smith
Loraine* = Eileen Smith Carstensen
Hank* = Bill Carstensen
Geraldine* (babysitter) = Janice
April* is a major character in the telling of the abuse. Her emerging memories takes up the majority of the book and they are horrific and graphic. While her alias family has a different composition, many of the pertinent personal details match those of real life of Niki Smith, the author's youngest daughter.
Nick Smith, Niki’s father, worked as a bank manager. So did April's* dad.
April* was abused by Hank*(Bill). Niki was abused by Bill.
April* had an eating disorder. Marion’s report included the fact that her youngest daughter had an eating disorder and they considered it an indicator of potential abuse by her son-in-law Bill.
April* relates her story through a therapy journal documenting coming out of the dissociative amnesia caused by her abuse.
Marion’s 2004 report told how Niki was 5 years old when the eldest daughter met Bill Carstensen. When asked at 16 years old, Niki denied that he had abused her. However, at 21 years old, and six months into a healthy, loving marriage Niki’s newly emerging memories were sending her to the hospital with severe panic attacks. Niki would have been 23 when the book Paperdolls was written, and 35 when Marion’s report was written.
The book tells the story while framing April* Daniels and Carol* Scott as part of two separate families, rather than as mother and daughter. This is an intentional misdirection to veil their internal family trauma and abuse and not implicate their family patriarch, Nick Smith.
If Niki was, in fact, co-author with her mother using the penname April* Daniels there is a lot more to the story than the family was willing to admit publicly.
April’s* dad, who was temple worker, was also abusing her. Both he and April’s* mom were alcoholics. Their drunken absence facilitated her abuse.
When April* was 16 years old, her dad tried putting an arm around her after a successful track meet. April* pushed his arm off of her a snapped, “Don’t ever touch me again!” The reaction led to a blowup between her parents and almost caused their divorce. April’s* father held it against her for years and called her a spoiled brat.
What’s interesting about this is that when Niki was 16, all of the details about the abuse of the neighborhood children, including Nick and Marion’s grandchildren, were coming out (1985). In the context of the constant steam of horrific revelations, this kind of public reaction by Niki against her dad would have drawn suspicious attention to Nick Smith.
April* had two brothers, Tom* and Byron*, both of whom abused her also. Niki did not have brothers. Here I wonder if the brothers* were alias for real life cousins. April* wasn’t married during her therapy journey, but Niki would have been.
If there are multiple layers of aliases, that might also mean that Jennifer* was a secondary alias for Eileen in addition to Loraine*. This would make Mike* (Jennifer’s husband) a secondary alias for Bill. They are only mentioned briefly in the beginning of the book when April went to Hawaii with Jennifer’s family. I think this secondary alias was important to distance April* from the Scott* family to further facilitate the obfuscation of April’s* real life intimate connection to and IN the Smith family.
Two of the main offenders in the larger story of neighborhood children abuse were the daughter and son-in-law of a high-ranking church apostle. They aren’t given aliases in the book, except in a fairy tale in the middle of the book in which they are called the Giant and the Witch.
In 2018 the Carstensen children, then adults, brought a lawsuit against Russell M. Nelson’s daughter and son-in-law Brenda and Dick Miles. They were in the same ward with the Carstensens in 1985. Bill was the clerk and Dick was a counselor in the bishopric.
Marion’s 2004 report named the Miles explicitly, Paperdolls only gave hints. The book explained how the organized sex ring, led by Giant and the Witch, were making child p0rn. What’s also ironic is that in the 1992 authorship of Paperdolls, Marion Smith is helping her daughter to heal in one sense by helping her tell her story. Yet through the web of aliases she is perpetuating the abuse by deflecting her own sins and protecting her husband who was one of April*/Niki’s first abusers.
While consciously unintentional, in the retelling of the story in 2004, Marion gave enough details of the events in 1985 to inadvertently admit the sins of her family.
Nick Smith, Marion Burrows Smith, Bill Carstensen, and Eileen (Kathleen Sevastopoulos) have all since passed. I pray that the remaining victims and ongoing victims of this generational abuse can find relief, healing, unite their voices, and finally see justice.

Appendix 2 - Two other reviews of the book [2b]
I've lived in Utah for most of my life and you have to put together the pieces of evidence that "All is NOT Well in Zion" contrary to what Prophet (Profit) Hinckley told the members in General Conference in 1996. He said the infamous words of "All is well in Zion" which fulfills LDS scriptural warnings found in 2 Nephi 28 about the blindly obedient being led astray by one (a false prophet DC 64:38-40) who will say "all is well in Zion." Later edited out of his talk written up in the Ensign!
The neighborhood sex rings mentioned in these two prominent neighborhoods along the Wasatch Front in Utah have also been confirmed in Cedar City, Lehi, and many, many other neighborhoods in Utah. A friend's young son was sodomized and traumatized in a neighborhood sex ring in Cedar City, UT eerily similar to what is described in this book. The publically disclosed official "Interoffice Memo" written by Presiding Bishop Glen L. Pace documents the FACTUAL existence of and confirmed satanic ritual abuse of over sixty individuals (mostly abused children) who all stated the same thing despite their widely dispersed locations -- that they were abused by church leaders and threatened if they told much as described in this truthful expose of sex abuse in Mormon neighborhoods.
The leader of one of the sex rings in the Boutiful neighborhood (exact neighborhood location not mentioned in the book but I am a friend of one of the abused girls) was the "apostle's daughter" with her "husband involved in banking". This would have been Kathleen Hinckley and Alan Barnes of Barnes banking.
Interestingly, it was Alan Barnes who confessed to the FBI regarding his writing out the bribery check for the Olympic Committe in the Salt Lake Olympic Committee corruption that made national news. An excellent news article on Barne's confession to the FBI was written in the Salt Lake Tribune entitled "The Silent Witness" since Alan Barnes conveniently died shortly after his confession to the FBI. It would have been horribly embarrassing for Hinckley's pubic image for Alan Barnes to have had to reiterate his confession during the famous Salt Lake City, Utah Olympic trial since his father-in-law was the Prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley, at that time.
I am a mormon who knows the scriptures regardin the need for the Lord's House to be cleansed. I honor the Book of Mormon which gains support from artifacts carbon-dated that match the time line existence of ancient Americans found in the Book of Mormon from the "Hopewell Culture" and other archeological findings in Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, New York, etc. as also carbon-dated by the Smithsonian. The Book of Mormon is a great witness of the "other sheep" that Christ visited (John 10:16), BUT the LDS church needs to get cleaned up and this book, Paperdolls is an excellent expose that All is NOT well in Zion!

This is reality where it needs most to be seen. Only a righteous Mormon can rape children and threaten to tell everyone they drank coffee, they had been made to drink, if they tell. Religon is the sheep's skin that hands pedophiles their prey. The ultimate hypocracy. The elephant under the rug. The Emperor's new cloths. It could never happen in a Mormon neighborhood because Jesus wouldn't allow it. It's the Lord's Church. The "good" ol' boy's club. This is an excruciatingly honest depiction of humanity at it's worst, and bravery and honisty at it's best. Good and evil can not be determined by appearances, or positions of trust. The process of facing and healing from childhood sexual abuse is as honest and real as it gets. Read it,and don't let it happen again. [2b]
