Cathy, you said exactly what I was thinking:

"Although he told them he did not want to be part of that organisation when he found out about the child abuse, then that is not usually how it works. He is unlikely to have been allowed to walk away without severe penalty, so it is unclear what actually happened. Mark would already have made several oaths of allegiance to his brothers, in prior degrees, on the way to being inducted into the Knights of Malta and been aware of the penalties of breaking those oaths."

Possibly Kelly was the penalty. The Grandmaster of Smom wasnt just a catholic but a practising Tibetan buddhist too. My mum asked him how he managed being a christian, catholic and a buddhist and he answered its not difficult...

It does give you a window into the fact that he was an adept and that the 8pointed star actually relates to Inanna, morning star and shows the babylonic or sumerian roots of the holy roman empire and mithras etc. Its important to note solomonic magic too that was given by god but misused for power and gain. Also the lord of time/saturn/chronos is crucial Temp-lars... time lords... etc Temp-le is time god... But its quite clear also that the abuse of children is compketely contrary to christian ethics... And they did not protect children as Knights no matter their oaths of service, quite the contrary
