Caldey Island Abuse Timeline
I have previously posted a blog by Kevin O’Connell about abuse on Caldey. Cistercian Monk Child Abuse and Trafficking on Caldey Island [141s] At the end of March there will be a campaign launched to bring attention to the abuse at Caldey, which we hope loads of people will join in.
As part of the preparation for that I have constructed a timeline of some of the abuse, which is necessary to make public now. It will be added to, as the lists of perpetrators, enablers - people and organisations are collated in due course, and list of videos etc.

Perpetrators / Child Abuse Offenders re. Caldey Island (being collated)
Father Thaddeus Katik went to the Island in 1947, ordained priest in 1956, died on the island 1992. Serial child abuser mainly girls. Never questioned by police who were not informed until 2014. Kotik gave children handmade chocolates and fresh produce, and invited the children to the dairy, where some abuse ocurred. Over at least two decades during the 1970 and 1980’s, some children complained to their parents. Some of the parents and monastery staff also complained to the head of the abbey, Father Robert

Abbott Daniel van Sandvoort went to Caldey in 1990, became Abbot in 1999 and is the current Abbott. Sandvoort was in charge when child sex offender Ashton stayed on the Island 2004-11, Father John Shannon stayed 2008-9 who turned out to be a child sex offender, as well as John Cronin 2009, another sex offender. Sandvoort was Abbott when the Abbey lied about not previously not knowing about Katik’s abuse, despite evidence to the contrary. Sandvoort was the Abbot when the Abbey fought tooth and nail to deny 6 survivors even an apology for their abuse. There is a pattern here and this man, the Abbot is, at the very least, an enabler of child abuse.
Abbot Robert O’Brien 1980’s -2009 did not tell police about abuse by Father Thaddeus Katik when told in late 1980’s. Katik went on offending. Robert O’Brien, asked the victim for forgiveness, and pleaded for leniency.

1989/90 Charlotte and elder sister reported the offences to the principal of their school, St Phillip’s Christian College in Newcastle, New South Wales. Deputy principal Richard Rule, who now runs a child care centre, prayed for the students and told them they “didn’t need to talk of this again because God has forgiven everyone”. Later admitted by Richard Rule
1990 Emily reported the abuse again, this time to staff at her school in Wales. The principal of her Catholic school in Swansea wrote to O’Brien about what Emily told him. O’Brien wrote back apologising and pleading leniency for Kotik because of his war service, saying he had told Emily that Kotik “hadn’t meant to hurt her”. He said he believed the contact between Kotik and the children comprised of “touches through their clothes”. According to the women in at least two of the cases the abuse was penetrative. O’Brien conceded that Kotik should be reported to police if any of the children “was subjected to sexual violence”. He wrote: “I summoned Fr Thaddeus and warned him of the wrong he was doing the children and the danger. He was very contrite, assured me it had gone no further. I tried to keep an eye on his goings and comings. I think he did improve a while.”

2014 Charlotte emailed the abbot of Caldey Abbey, Brother Daniel van Santvoort. Van Santvoort had heard allegations against Kotik. “I have heard occasionally about this serious matter as regards Fr Thaddeus”. Van Santvoort told her the monastery knew about the monk’s offences and that he had been reprimanded and banned from contact with islanders and visitors in the 1980s, but had not been reported to police. “I am fully aware now of this terrible criminal offence and Fr Thaddeus should have there and then been handed over to the police – something that never happened.” When Charlotte asked if he was aware of any other victims, he responded that Charlotte’s cousin Adele made contact with him four years earlier with similar allegations. Van Santvoort admitted the abuse by Kotik had been “going on for years”.
2014 Jun Van Santvoort flew to Australia to personally apologise to Charlotte, her sister and their parents.
2014 Police were informed about Kotik. Van Santvoort forwarded Charlotte’s emails to Police and who contacted Charlotte. She wrote a formal statement and submitted it to them, but she heard nothing further. Tenby police did not respond to requests for comment from the Guardian.
2014 Tracey Emmott of Emmott Snell solicitors led the case for 6 women against Caldey Abbey. They were seeking acknowledgment, apology, and compensation. Their case maintained that the abbey knew about the offences and failed to report Kotik to police, and that the abbey was liable for alleged assaults committed on property owned by the abbey, as Kotik was charged with the safekeeping and care of the children.
The Abbey backflipped on its previous admissions and claimed instead it had no knowledge of the alleged sexual abuse, and that there was an “evidential disadvantage” in that none of the monks at the abbey during the time of the allegations were still alive. The defence therefore required the claimants to prove each offence. The abbey also claimed it was not liable as the priest was not employed by the abbey to provide care for children. In addition, the abbey invoked the statute of limitations, claiming the victims were out of time to sue for damages and it was not possible now for the abbey to get a fair trial. The plaintiffs accepted meagre compensation payments and received no apology. Other parents who complained were mentioned in the court documents, but their children were not parties to the case
2014 Charlotte letter to the St Phillip’s Christian College in Newcastle, New South Wales school principal, Graeme Irwin. Charlotte expressed anger that Richard Rule’s failure to report to police deprived Kotik’s victims of seeing the offender charged and convicted
2014 The Dyfed-Powys Police force investigated in 2014 and 2016 but could not prosecute as the monk, Father Thaddeus Kotik, died in 1992. "These reports were recorded as crimes and victims contacted by police." During the investigation, information was obtained to confirm that the perpetrator was deceased and therefore a prosecution was not possible. Appropriate professional support was offered and the matter was drawn to a close.

2017 Nov 23 Guardian [g4] Caldey Island: police investigate second man over sexual abuse claims Detectives are investigating a second man over accusations of sexual abuse on Caldey Island after it was revealed that a Cistercian monk (Kotik) allegedly abused at least 11 girls in the 1970s and 80s. Police said the alleged assault took place at about the same time, and the accused was visiting the island off Tenby in Pembrokeshire, south-west Wales. Officers refused to give further details because they said it would jeopardise the investigation, but said he was not a member of the abbey or abbey staff. Dyfed-Powys police are aware of allegations by eight women – the six original complainants and two more who have since come forward. A spokesperson said: “Following the recent media reporting of sexual abuse at Caldey Island, police received two further reports of non-recent sexual abuse.“They relate to offences committed during the same time period (between 1977 and 1987) and with the same named perpetrator, Thaddeus Kotik. These crimes have been recorded and officers are in contact with the victims during the investigation and to offer specialist support”.
2017 Nov 24 Guardian [g5] Sex offender hid in Caldey Island abbey for seven years Paul Ashton aka James Robert Judd lived among the Cistercian monks on the private island off the Pembrokeshire coast in south-west. Ashton had been arrested by police in West Sussex in 2004 when officers executed a warrant at his address in Bracklesham Bay. He was given bail while police examined his computers. Officers found more than 5,000 images of children but he had vanished when they returned. “He operated the island’s satellite internet and phone system, managed online accommodation bookings and the accounts and worked in the mail room. He put himself in an ideal position.” At Chichester crown court on 1 March 2012, Ashton admitted possessing more than 5,000 indecent images of children and was jailed for 30 months. The court was told he was found after an anonymous call was made to the Crimestoppers charity.
Victims claim there is at least one monk still alive who knew abuser Kotik and say the abbot himself knew Kotik from 1990, two years before the monk died in 1992. Six women sued the abbey over the allegations against Kotik and another seven women have now come forward to the Guardian since the article exposed the offender last Saturday.

"It's very important for me to not just have my story told. I don't want anybody to say to me 'oh you poor thing, oh that's really sad, that must have been really hard'. Angela Burns, the Conservative AM for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, supported the call for an inquiry and said the Catholic Church needed to do more. 2017 Dec 12 Guardian [g7] Priest jailed for child abuse images lived on scandal-hit Caldey Island Father John Shannon , Thaddeus Kotik Revelations mean that four men convicted or accused of sexual offences against children lived or stayed on tiny monastic Welsh island. Father John Shannon, Caldey Island's parish priest at St David's Church in 2008, was subsequently caught on the mainland with pictures of children as young as nine, lived on the island off the Welsh coast for nine months. The revelation means that four men convicted or accused of sexual offences against children have now been identified as having lived or stayed on Caldey and will increase pressure for an inquiry. 2008 - 2009 Father John Shannon abuser lived on the island for a total of 9 months. While Shannon was living on the island, Ashton was hiding from police there.
Another convicted criminal, John Cronin, is suspected to have lived under an assumed name in a cottage owned by the monastery for a month in 2009. Van Santvoort said the abbey did not know of Cronin’s alleged stay. Another six women and a man have since approached the Guardian alleging abuse by Kotik.
2017 Dec 12 BBC Two more offenders have ties to Caldey Island, source says Rev John Shannon, was Caldey Island's parish priest at St David's Church in 2008. Shannon took on the role of priest on a trial basis with the abbey's approval after islanders asked for the parish church to be reopened. Psychiatrists labelled Cronin one of the most dangerous sexual predators in Britain after he committed 50 offences including an attack on a woman in 1992 in which he posed as a priest Cronin stayed on the island for a month under an alias, at the same time that Ashton was living in the tower at Caldey Abbey, but left in 2009.
2017 Dec 22 Guardian [g8] Woman abused as a child by Caldey Island monk waives right to anonymity Joanna Biggs, whose sister Theresa drowned off Caldey Island in 1977 as a child says they were both sexually abused by Katik there in the dairy, aged 6 and 7. Kotik’s modus operandi was to befriend families who lived there or who regularly visited. He gave them handmade chocolates and fresh produce, and invited the children to the dairy. He abused children in a room beside the dairy, on walks through the woods, in dens or in isolated rocky coves near the beach. The Guardian’s original article triggered panic attacks. “It was the picture of Fr Thad holding the two girls – they’re not Theresa and I, but you can see how tightly he held them in his arms.”
Biggs insists that Singleton’s evidence was false because the nun had given her sister permission to swim. “She helped me to put Theresa’s armbands on. And then she said, ‘Off you go.’ My sister was not naughty.” Biggs said she and her parents have lived with the nun’s lie for more than 40 years. “It is time for my sister to be released from false blame,” she said. Biggs argued that the story of her sister’s drowning was relevant to the abuse scandal because it showed that children’s voices were often ignored.
“The fact that Fr Thad was left for so many years to continue to do whatever he liked suggests at the very least, tolerance or blindness by Caldey Abbey to that same behaviour in others. These are offenders who understand Catholicism and know how to hide within it and manipulate it.”
Biggs added: “There appears to be a firm position taken by the current abbot [van Sandvoort] towards protecting the interests of the monastery, and a distinct lack of openness, clarity and even goodwill when it comes to the dealing with revelations of the abuse that took place. His order is responsible for covering it up and allowing it to continue. Acknowledgment is everything.”
Police are investigating allegations that a seasonal worker [perp 2?] sexually assaulted a girl on the island.
Scoutmount- It can also be revealed that the abbey’s wealthy “mother house”, Scourmont Abbey near Chimay in Belgium, denied legal liability for the abuse. Caldey’s webpage spells out how the island was sold to the Cistercian order in the 1920s to be occupied by a group of monks from Scourmont and adds that the present monks are the successors of the first Caldey Cistercians. Kotik spent time at Scourmont. But Armand Veilleux, the Scourmont abbot from 1999 until his retirement in November this year, said Caldey was an autonomous house in civil and canon law. Teresa Elwes, a devotee who has maintained a relationship with Caldey and Scourmont for 40 years and knew Kotik, said the mother house – which is known for its brewery – could afford to compensate victims properly. 2017 Dec 22 BBC Caldey Island: Family's review calls into girl's drowning The family of a child who drowned while swimming on a Caldey Island beach has asked for her inquest to be reviewed - 40 years after she died. Sister Theresa's sister Joanna Biggs said that Sister Sheila Singleton lied and that Theresa had not disobeyed an instruction not to swim in the sea. Theresa died 1977 Jul 18. 2017 Dec 22 BBC Caldey Island abuse: Drowned girl and sister were victims Joanna Biggs panic attacks etc, buried in same church as Kotik. She has echoed other calls for Caldey Abbey to consider exhuming the monk's body. "It's very hard to see them there, in the same graveyard. [The abbey] have to understand that by leaving the grave there, they're accepting him as a man of God, a holy man." Kotik would befriend families who lived on the island or visited regularly, giving them chocolates or fresh produce, and inviting children into the dairy. Kotik's victims have also backed calls from the Welsh Conservatives for an independent inquiry into the scandal. However the Welsh Government has ruled out an inquiry while Dyfed-Powys Police are investigating the allegations. 2017 Dec 29 BBC Caldey Island: Compensation call for sex abuse victims A devotee of the abbey on Caldey Island said Scourmont Abbey in Chimay, Belgium, had a "moral and ethical duty" to take some responsibility for the offences of Father Thaddeus Kotik. Teresa Elwes, Ms Elwes, a supporter of Caldey Abbey, claimed Scourmont, which brews Chimay - one of Belgium's most popular beers - could afford to compensate victims more adequately. Ms Elwes, a former forensic psychologist who regularly visited Caldey Island from the age of 14 into her 20s, claims Brother Robert, who died in 2009, was appointed by Scourmont. former abbot of Caldey, Brother Robert O'Brien, became aware of allegations against Kotik in 1990 but did not refer them to police. A book about Caldey Abbey, published in 1996, said the authority for the monastery reverted to Scourmont after the former abbot, Dom James, died. The book stated the then-abbot of Scourmont, Dom Guerric Baudet, appointed Brother Robert. But this is disputed by the present abbot, Dom Armand Veilleux, who said Brother Robert was "elected" by the Caldey community.
The Conservatives’ children’s spokesman in the Welsh assembly, Darren Millar, has called on the Welsh government to launch an investigation into Caldey Island. ?
2018 Feb 9 Guardian [g9] Caldey Abbey: first male victim comes forward to describe sexual abuse Kotik spent years grooming him and abused “Mark” on several occasions from the age of eight. More than a dozen women have come forward to report offences committed by Kotik, Kotik quickly made the visitors feel privileged by inviting them into the monastery’s private walled garden and serving them tea, squash and biscuits. It was not until the following year, in the same garden, that Thaddeus lifted Mark and sat the boy beside him. Kotik took Mark into the monastery.
Dyfed-Powys Police said it had received eight allegations of historical child sexual abuse on Caldey Island - seven regarding Thaddeus Kotik and the other against a male visitor to the island. V Mark

He would like the privately owned island to be taken from the monks and handed over to a conservation body. Mark remembered how Kotik would hide treats around the island. “Can I ask you, when you open a bar of chocolate do you have memories of being sexually assaulted? When you see a picture of a monk in a newspaper or on television or indeed in a public place, do you have memories of being sexually abused as a child? I truly hope that in all of these your answer will be no.”
He asked for a meeting with the abbot [saandvoort] but says he was shocked to receive – via his solicitor – a cursory response acknowledging receipt of the letter. Mark had thought of trying to confront the abbot this week but in the end could not bear the idea and simply spent a few hours visiting the places he had been abused. He is planning to launch a civil action.
2018 Aug 10 BBC Caldey Island: 20 people claim monk abused them as children Twenty people have now claimed they were sexually abused by a monk living on Caldey Island when they were children. Father Thaddeus Kotik died in 1992 without facing any criminal charges into claims he abused children between 1977 and 1987. Since November, 14 new people have reported they were abused by the monk when they visited the island off Tenby, Pembrokeshire, when they were children, Dyfed Powys Police has confirmed. Jenny and Jenny’s sisters. She told BBC Wales that finally piecing together the information and putting together the story of her abuse made her realise how her life had fallen apart and led to her near death. "I became an alcoholic, I had an eating disorder, and I was hanging around with drug addicts and prostitutes," she said."I was in relationships with violent, alcoholic men and all these terrible things nearly ended my life because I was very heavily into drink and drugs, and living with a heroin addict is pretty full on." She has since managed to turn her life around and has lived without drink and drugs for 12 years and has been on a quest to find out what happened to her as a child ever since. Jenny realised that she was abused between the ages of five and six when she compared two school photographs - she said she looked tormented in the later picture."Fortunately, my mum keeps diaries and lo and behold between the two school photos when I was five and six, he came to stay with us for one night in the November of 1978. Caldey Abbey is not under their responsibility but they have been advising the Abbey on their safeguarding policies and practices for the last 18 months. The Bishop Tom Burns said that “The Abbey has insisted on retaining its oversight of any specific cases, past, present, or in the future.” David Greenwood is a lawyer specialising in child sexual abuse cases and has worked on several high profile cases involving the Catholic Church. “It’s a massive systemic problem with the Church. The internal rules and the way in which they defend their reputation has created this space in which paedophiles can get away with it.
“The church are covering things up and have been for a long time. There are still lots of cover-ups that I’m sure haven’t come to light. Their organisations, the way they are set up, their rules, are a danger to children.” A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “Our position is the same as set out in our response in 2017. We will of course reconsider the matter were new information to come to light.”

It has come to light that the abbey was told by a victim about the abuse in the 1980s but did not report it until 2014. Instead the abbot at the time, Robert O’Brian, asked the victim for forgiveness. ITV Wales asked the current abbot, Brother Daniel van Santvoort for his response to the latest evidence that Kevin O’Connell was also abused on the island. Despite contacting the Brother several times, he never responded. The Diocese of Menevia in Swansea was contacted as it has been advising the Abbey on their safeguarding policies and practices for the last 18 months. 2021 Dec 1 BBC Caldey Island: Historical child sex abuse claims re-investigated [Is Jeffries dead?] Mr O'Connell said he previously gave six hours of evidence to Dyfed-Powys Police about his abuse, which included allegations against Fr Jeffries. A file was then passed on to Sussex police, as the diocese where Fr Jeffries served was largely within that force area. The case was opened and closed by Sussex police. Sussex Police said there was not enough new information available that would enable them to progress an investigation. Newyddion S4C has established that although the diocese where Fr Jeffries worked was largely in Sussex, the address where Mr O'Connell alleges he was abused is in Surrey. When contacted about this, Surrey Police said they had not been made aware of the allegations by the victim nor Dyfed-Powys or Sussex Police forces and had no comment to make. Dyfed-Powys Police said in a statement that because information has brought forward that was "not previously disclosed in the initial complaint", officers would investigate further. The force said it received the complaint on 11 April 2019, where "enquiries were made to identify the suspect and it was established that he died two days after the report was made".

2022 Jun 30 Pat Mills blog Kevin O’Connell Caldey Island - Cistercian Monks Apart from Caldey Island, Kevin has also related about the Catholic trafficking of children in Southern England. “I never knew until 2021 I was under the court of protection and social services. Social services introduced my parents to the local Catholic priest whose parish was in a small town a few miles away from us. The Priest started to give my parents food, second clothes, toys and cash. They became lifelong friends with Father (Thad) Thaddeus and Father (C) Charles. Father C went back to his parish on the Sussex/Surry boarders [more] For the next 4-5 years Father C would abuse me at my home and now was taking me back to his Parish where priests and Bishops gang raped me. A few weeks later Father C turned up and this time he had Father Thad with him. I would be taken into a living room were there’d be up to a dozen priests and bishops waiting for me. Eating the chocolates sitting on Father Thadd’s knees he started to grope me between my legs and kissing me wildly on the lips, I was so scared and upset that he was no different than Father C.”
Every day now he came and dragged me away, while our carers and the Nuns watched and did nothing to stop it.Now I was taken to the old ruins where other monks were there waiting. Father Thadd gave me Mead and sat down on what I have always called an Altar stone where he groped and masturbated over me. The other monks also masturbated over me. Each day I cried coming back to the beach, but no one cared, my sister would run up to me and we’d hug, she had been raped by Father Tadd. I spent time in hospital recovering and the police came and told me they know who done it and my mam paid them by giving them her Benefit book. I went back to the police with my MP with 80 pages of evidence and In 2019 I made a 6-hour police video evidence of my abuse by Monks on Caldey Island and Father C and his friends gang raping me for years. But during this time the police were planning to try to discredit me by getting a proven corrupt police officer and his family to make false allegations. The police have a safeguarding monk on Caldey who is a retired police officer . Well, that’s not independent safeguarding. The police are failing in their duty to safeguard children staying and visiting Caldey Island. I have since discovered that 2 MPs lived at some point on Caldey and also a serving police officer also lived on Caldey in late fifties. v
Poor and deprived Catholic children – many from the Birmingham diocese – were sent on holiday to Caldey Island where the monks were waiting for them… It’s a familiar story
Kevin - “I came out about it in late 2018 and since then with the help of Dinah Mulholland and others have campaigned for a public inquiry and to bring the Monks on Caldey into the UK laws and provide a independent safeguarding for children from Catholic Churches and schools still retreat on Caldey Island.”
